For a second, I thought there wasn’t a single physical object I couldn’t live without. But one emerged pretty quickly, and I’m definitely not alone in my attachment to it. Some would call it an addiction, though I wouldn’t go quite that far.

Denial, maybe?

I’ve lived long enough to remember functioning without it. Not super efficiently, and painfully slowly compared to now, but we all managed just fine. Then the tech improved, merged with a clunky early version of the internet, and gradually evolved until it eclipsed almost everything else. For years, I actually refused to buy a  TV or a laptop because this single device covered every base.

I’m talking, of course, about the smartphone.

It’s my main office equipment, my camera, bank teller, map, and primary source of entertainment squeezed into a single pocket-sized glass rectangle. Losing it wouldn’t just be an inconvenience; it would stall my day-to-day life. I’m not being dramatic. It’s not impossible to be locked out of your own accounts by two-factor authentication. Irony at its finest: security is so tight that you can be locked out of your own phone. What a miserable prospect!

So yeah… my name is Rudiano, and I’m a phone addict.

Who’s joining me at this AA meeting?

Let’s see what other bloggers say on this topic.

P.S: I’ve just compiled my “Complete Barn Collection”.: all my short stories featuring animals from the barn. Narrated by yours truly. Prologue by Professor Hoot, the wise owl.

Check it out!

Cheers!

The smart phone might be looked upon by future generations as the best and the worst invention. Brilliantly powerful, but also practically limitless in its ability to bombard us with an overwhelming level of information.

Totally agreed there! I would be lost without my smartphone.

It is insane to me how addicted people are to their phones! Mine is basically just my mp3 player (for the car), camera, and e-reader, but I do use it sometimes for scanning documents when I’m working in the archives.

Good on you! A tool, not your master!

I hear you. It’s hard to imagine life before smartphones. They make life so much easier in many ways. I truly couldn’t do my job without my phone. I had a flip phone before I entered real estate, but I had to upgrade within the first year.

My answer this week is rather boring.

Same! It has my payments, my calendar, my life basically. I CAN do all those things on my laptop, but not nearly as easily when I’m away from the house.
