We can be our own toughest critics. We have a grand vision of what a creative person is, a vision so high that even successful creators might not fully embody it. It’s good to have ideals, but the challenge and joy come from bridging the gap between reality and those ideals.
What Makes a Creative?
A “creative” according to the Cambridge dictionary: A person whose job involves producing original ideas or doing artistic work
It doesn’t matter how much you earn from it. If you’re creating, you’re a creative. Don’t be discouraged if you’re not where you’d like to be yet. Keep going and trust the process.
Art of Work then Work of Art
Think of your creative journey like an internship. It’s about learning, gaining experience, and even making mistakes.
Creativity involves allowing yourself to make those mistakes, and art is knowing which ones to keep.
Pay Your Dues
Like any job, you need to learn the ropes, gain confidence, and earn your way up. Focus on constant improvement and strategic growth.
The Business Side
Many creatives shy away from the business aspect, but it’s crucial for success. You’re not only the talent but also the marketer, promoter, and salesperson.
Start Simple
If the business side feels overwhelming, start by asking yourself key questions:
* What’s your goal?
* What kind of lifestyle do you want?
* How much do you need to earn?
* What’s non-negotiable in your vision?
Clear Vision, Clear Path
Having a clear vision is essential for creating the appropriate roadmap.
We live in a time where it’s easier than ever to create and sell our work independently. To stand out and thrive, we need to learn to master both our craft and the business side.
